MLK Jr. / Love Thread
Been a crazy last year and an extremely divided last 4 years (I'd even go back to 12 years), hopefully over the next 4 we can see some more love, unity, and understanding between most Americans.

Re: MLK Jr. / Love Thread
MLK set the standard for where Civil Rights movement could have gone. His assassination was a huge frickin detour on the road to a true United States, and I think we are seeing the fruits of it to this day. I know I don't speak for the millions who have been repressed, abused, tortured or even simply held back due to the color of their skin, but the dream of a society that sees people solely on the basis of their abilities and character without regard to unchangeable factors, seems as far away today as at any point in our history.

Re: MLK Jr. / Love Thread
At dinner last week I asked my daughter what she did in school and she said she watched some stuff about MLK. So we talked about civil rights and I told her that "he accelerated civil rights and we would not be where we are today in treating everyone equal without him" .. and as the words left my mouth, my brain was like "really dude? like we are so far ahead of where we were in the 60s compared to right now and everything that is going on? have we even progressed one inch since the 60s?"
Disappointed she couldnt remember anything about MLK that she had just learned ... I told her her existence as a half black half white human being would have been illegal in America 60 years ago. She didnt seem to understand. Then we talked about Loving v Virginia and had a pretty good talk. |

First Energy, my employer, made MLK and Veterans day paid holidays. Both should have been paid holidays forever, BUT, im happy that they finally realized how important both of these days are.

Re: MLK Jr. / Love Thread
I'm torn between "hey, lets try to get along for the first time in years" and "I could write a masterpiece in shit-talking with how MLK's death has set us back going on 50 years now."
This isn't the appropriate forum for that so if anyone wants to have that convo join me in the politics forum.

This thread was for positive energy only. Plenty of other threads to argue in.

Re: MLK Jr. / Love Thread
I did a report on King back in 9th grade. One of the facts I found interesting is that he is the only person whose Birthday is recognized as a National holiday. I think that alone speaks volumes of his importance.

This is hysterical. It is exactly what we have all been telling you for four years. You are fucking with me right? Chico telling people not to ignore divisive rhetoric and gleefully promote LEADERS WHO LIE in order to drive a bigger lie. Hahahahaha. Hahaha. Oh man that is awesome. |
