Re: MLB 2014 Season
The problem I see is there are so few true ace pitchers out there and the contract amounts they get are so high that they can kill a teams ability to sign other positions. I think the best option would be to find a number one that is still under contract for a few years on a lower base salary. I agree with Weiters he is no bust. If he played in a major market he would be a perennial all star.

Re: MLB 2014 Season
This has been a fun series loved the way the Giants gave the Royals a taste of their own medicine in game 4. Also love how Steve perry turns the middle of the 8th into a 40,000+ Journey karaoke show

Well an end of an era in Baltimore. I am okay with losing Markakis but he will be missed.

Max Scherzer closing in on new multiyear contract - ESPN
Lol what an incredibly stupid move. Thought Nats would learn after ryan Zimmerman and jason werth...this may be the worst of them all. Guy is 30. Lol dumb

Re: MLB 2014 Season
Jeez 15 mil a year for 14 years. That might be the most lucrative contract in sports history.

Re: MLB 2014 Season
Not really...but it actually is a fantastic contract for both sides. Scherzer guarantees himself money for 14 years, likely beyond the end of his career and the Nats maintain salary moderation n the short term. In 8 years that 15 won't be as much given the current growth trend for the sport and the Nats will likely have increased revenues because of the their TV contract dispute.

210 million, the largest contract to a right handed starter? What about Strasberg and Zimmerman? Let them walk or trade?

Re: MLB 2014 Season
We'll I have watched SS a hell of a lot and I remain unconvinced he is actually an ace. He's a emotional midget on the mound. Huge talent, weak makeup, injury risk. I'd trade him now in a heart beat for a good deal.
Zimmerman I love but it looks like they are resigned to the idea that he really only wants to test the market and possibly get closer to his home in Wisconsin. Signing scherzer guards against losing Zimmerman for nothing. In general though I don't like these big contracts for SPs. They need to find a way to ink Desmond. I know they're high on the new prospect they got for Souza but he's a few years out and by then desi could slide to 2nd. |

If Stras could learn to move on from a mistake instead of letting it get to him he could be a really good pitcher. And I like Zimm too but I feel like this Scherzer signing is their way of saying,"the phones are open boys make us a good offer." |
