We have an elite DL, and a couple other good players. That isn't a contender no matter who you plug in at QB. We beat one winning team and only made the playoffs because we are in the worst division in football and Dallas lost their franchise QB for the year who didn't play in either game against them. What is so hard to understand here? Stafford or Watson does NOT put us in contender category, not by a longshot. NOT EVEN CLOSE. This is the problem with this franchise, perpetually mortgaging the future, in the deluded belief we are contender when we are not even close. We lost to EVERY winning team we played this year except Steelers. EVERY ONE. The Rams have talent all over the roster and are truly just a QB away from being a contender. We are NOT anywhere close to being a contender. With a real QB instead of Goff, they could have beat the Pack or it would have been close. Heinecke earned the right to come in as 3rd QB and get a fair shot to compete to start. You make it out black and white, we must either be willing to mortgage the future absurdly, or think Heinecke is Bart Starr. There is a middle ground. WE ARE NOT CLOSE TO BEING A CONTENDER. WE ARE 1-2 SOLID DRAFTS AWAY FROM BEING ANYWHERE IN THE BALLPARK, PLEASE PUT THE KOOLAID DOWN. SNEAKING INTO PLAYOFFS AT 7-9 AND GETTING DESTROYED IN 1ST ROUND DOESN'T EQUAL CONTENDER, AND WE HAD SOLID PLAY AT QB IN THAT GAME. WE LOST BECAUSE DIDN'T HAVE A GOOD MLB, COULDN'T COVER, DIDN'T HAVE OTHER VIABLE WR THREATS, OL COULDN'T BLOCK ELITE RUSHERS, ETC. JOE MONTANA IN HIS PRIME COULDN'T HAVE ENABLED US TO BEAT THE BUCS. The reason we are not a contender with a shiny new QB is that we lack talent all over roster except at DL. No MLB. No shutdown corner. No FS. NOTHING at WR besides McL. No franchise LT. We have to beat teams with all those pieces and HOF QBs to be a "contender." We need 3-6 more stud players to even be in the conversation as contender, plus much better depth. This is RUDIMENTARY football knowledge. If you think we are close to being a contender, you are just flat out wrong. You want to mortgage the very picks we need to have any hope of being a contender. At a minimum, we will not be a contender until we get at franchise LT, a shutdown CB, a stud MLB, a competent FS, a #2 WR, better depth at numerous positions, and of course a QB. We need 1-2 more years of draft and develop to have any hope of being a contender. That includes drafting and developing a QB. The belief that we are only a QB away from contending is flat out wrong. WRONG. McVay is a brilliant coach, MUCH better than RR. Still insane we hired Jay Gruden and let McVay walk. Rams have pissed away tons of picks and will not be competitive once their window closes. We could debate the virtue of going all in they way they have, if they win a SB to them it was worth it. However, what would be madness is Homers thinking we are as talented as Rams, are just a QB away from contending like them, and then going all in mortgaging future based on belief we are a contender when we are not. You then have a team that can't contend now or in the future. Which is of course what the Redskins have done ENDLESSLY for decades+ now. Are you sure you aren't Vinny Cerrato's cousin? Or Bruce Allen's son? |

Re: WFT Quarterback Thread - Post SEASON 2021
Every team is "1 -2 solid drafts" away, even the best teams have holes and weaknesses. Our coaching staff's strength is the Defense. Thinking that a team needs two more drafts will get any FO fired.

Re: WFT Quarterback Thread - Post SEASON 2021
I really don't get what you think the solution is for the obvious need at QB. I don't want to misstate your ideal plan, but this is what I think it is.
No trades - No qb's available are good enough or worth using our draft resources to get. Get a franchise qb through the draft, with no interference by DS. If the QB drafted doesn't pan out, go through the process again, changing FO if need be to find the right group that can work within the conditions of WFT as owned by DS. I don't think you would be ok using the resources needed to get up to the #1 or 2 overall pick, so if having losing seasons till we find that QB is what has to happen than so be it. Sorry, I just don't get the plan. I hear all the negative reasons for what we can't do, but I don't have a clue at all what you realistically think we can do. |

What more of a chance do you want to give him? No team was calling offering him a second promotion within a year. We don't know how RR talked to him about the job and expectations, but at the same token we do know that RR ran a year without a GM and likely watched how people handled various duties. What chance did you think KS deserved? |

Yeah you can look at it through your piss against the wind glasses, but this team, with this coach and players put together a base foundation, that with continued growth this year, and SOLID QB play, can be a contender for the next 4 years. But to do that you have to solve the qb before we will be considered a contender, and you have to do it before you waste a DL that has 4 1st rounders on their rookie deals. [/rant] |

KS had a year on the job, with RR on chemo. You think RR didn't give KS a chance. Without being in the building I absolutely guarantee that RR gave KS tasks that gave RR either a warm fuzzy or red flag about KS' ability to be the GM. Saying that there ought to have been an interview for the guy in the position to be doing the GM job is crazy talk, when he basically was living the inteview for 365 days (Jan 13 2019 to Jan 13 2020) |

Re: WFT Quarterback Thread - Post SEASON 2021
I imagine losing 1 or 2 starters from the D wouldn't have a great effect on the locker room. Any incoming QB that 'caused' that would be immediately working to fix those locker room grumbles as well as his day job. Not ideal.
I doubt Watson's on our list except as a fantasy signing. I just don't see RR giving up that much capital. I bet the Texans are loving the Stafford trade because of the bar being set. If Watson were to move and go for less than 3 x 1sts, they are going to look like (bigger) idiots. At this point unless someone comes in with a stupid offer (Raiders?) or top 5/10 picks (Dolphins) I don't see Watson actually going anywhere. He could holdout but I think he must see that would likely hurt his stock dramatically. Given the way it's shaken out with Stafford, I'd look at a 1 year deal with someone like Fitz and address our long term QB need in the draft, but NOT trade up (too expensive, you may as well trade for Watson). I'd be OK with Fitz, Heinicke and a rookie, on the basis we retain 3 QB's again. Montez on PS. Maybe Lance or Jones if they drop as far as #19? After his showing at the Senior Bowl practices, Jones is being talked about as cusp of 1st round. Maybe someone will reach but I'd strongly consider either if available. Anyone thinking about maybe Mond in a lower round, based on his Senior Bowl performance? Rhule was paying him compliments... |

Re: WFT Quarterback Thread - Post SEASON 2021
So where we are now...
While I wanted Stafford here, I'm glad we didn't get Stafford for the price we reportedly offered which was greater than the Rams deal (minus a QB exchange). https://www.rotoworld.com/football/n...699/alex-smith Now onto Watson: The Texans are asking for far too much in my opinion: 2 1sts plus 2 2nds + 2 defensive starters. NO THANK YOU. I do not want a worn out or mediocre QB like Fitzpatrick, Trubisky, Wentz, Tyrod Taylor or Newton. I say, roll with Smith one more year but build around him, massively, and draft a QB for the future, maybe Mac Jones or Trey Lance if available. Get an Allen Robinson, Kenny Golladay or Chris Godwin if he'll leave TB. Get a stud LT to protect Smith like Russell Okung if Saahdiq Charles isn't ready to take over. Go after a top LB free agent like Shaq Barrett. The amount we'd spend on DeShaun Watson could get is a few key pieces to upgrade this team. Alex Smith was 5-1 with a team that had a ton of injuries all over the offensive line and only one real WR weapon. Give him the offseason to get healthier and stronger, give him the keys to an upgraded hot rod of an offense one more time, and have his successor learning from him and waiting for his turn. I think that's our best plan. Smith and a rookie will cost far less than Watson and will allow us to massively upgrade this team in most other areas of need.

Re: WFT Quarterback Thread - Post SEASON 2021
All the upcoming players that have made us into a better team came from Draft or free agency .. very few came from a big trade .. I’m all in on a QB need but I hope we don’t start giving away a lot of draft capital to land that one can’t miss QB that might not work out ... I thought Cousins was the one player that would put the Vikings in the super bowl ?? We need another wave of young draft picks to bolster this team before we mortgage the future on a can’t miss QB .. bring in a Fitz or a Carr ( for modest price) heck we are still paying Smith ,looks like he wants to play out his contract .
