The simplest way to describe his mental and emotional state regarding his job would probably be to say "He's done". He doesn't have a plan anymore and his explanations of why he does things make no sense because he's not thinking straight. He's befuddled by the whole thing. He needs a long rest. The good news is that he has money. So, he should probably retire and have a wonderful time.
