Re: Merged: The Movies Thread

When they were researching for the original Top Gun movie, the producers went to the U.S. Air Force and asked them for their support and to make it an Air Force movie. In one of the most colossal PR f-ups of all time, the Air Force said no. Probably thought it was too juvenile or something.

The Navy said yes and the rest is history. Of course, since then the Navy has probably recruited a million seamen based on watching the movie. I guarantee that most of those recruits were not F-14 or F-18 pilots.

Re: Merged: The Movies Thread

The night Top Gun came out I went to see it. I was probably 12 or 13 at the time. When we got there we were told our ticket included a surprise free screening of a new movie that would be released in the next few weeks. I remember being all nervous because a friends dad had taken us and now we be late getting home. We had to stand in a line to use the pay phone to call our folks and letting them know the details. My dad thought I was BSing but eventually let me stay and watch both movies.

Oh by the way the name of the free movie we got to watch first: Ferris Bueller's Day Off

Talk about the best movie night of my life. 2 classics in one shot, we were so blown away by the time my dad picked us up.

Although I'm a pilot, I think Ferris Bueller's Day Off was a better movie. There was just some unbelievably bogus aspects to Top Gun that made all the guys in my squadron just laugh at it. But that's Hollywood.

I hope this new Top Gun will be a little more realistic - I mean flying a fighter is just such an incredible experience. There's no need to over-exaggerate some things - it's cool enough on its own without going so over-the-top. Also, the F-18 is a much better plane than the F-14, and it has much more variety in its missions.

Wow! Great story...Ferris bueller is a freakin classic. If I’m flipping thru channels and it’s on, I always stop.

Also I’m going to the movies for this one:

Margot Robbie is such a hot piece too

Agreed! We saw it last week. Not my favorite Tarantino film, but still a good one. Great performance by Pitt.

Crazy there will be sequels to Coming to America and Top Gun next year. Will be hard to top the originals but think there will be plenty of interest in these new ones next year.

wewlads. I'm not one for seeing a ton of movies in theaters, but this will definitely be one. Joaquin Phoenix is just the right amount of crazy to make this work.
