Re: What happens with Kyle Smith?
I have 2 questions. If the WFT and RR want to promote KS would they still have to do interviews to satisfy the Rooney Rule? Also if they bring in an outside person didnt we see something about getting draft picks for that action?

Re: What happens with Kyle Smith?
1. Under the expanded Rooney Rule, clubs will also be required to interview at least one minority candidate for coordinator positions and at least one external minority candidate for the senior football operations or general manager position.
https://www.reuters.com/article/us-f...-idUSKBN22V34X ^^ it seems we have to interview at least one outside org minority candidate 2. Teams that lose a minority coach or executive to a head coach or general manager job with another team will receive a third-round compensatory pick for two consecutive years, per Pelissero. If a team loses a minority coach and an executive to HC and GM roles, that club will receive a third-round compensatory pick for three consecutive years. https://www.nfl.com/news/nfl-owners-...-coaches-execs ^^ Seems the team who developed (refused to promote) and then lost a minority staff member gets the picks, not the hiring team |

If they can replace Smith with somebody as good or better, great! I'd just hate to lose a proven talent evaluator and be left with another BA or Vinny. Which is why I'd like to see him retained along with the new hire. But what do I know!?

I'm not so sure the success that everybody seems to be attributing to Kyle (although I haven't seen anything that shows he's solely responsible for any of the drafts) can't be duplicated by someone else, perhaps with more experience, whom they have their eyes on. I think people are largely comparing Kyle, and his purported draft success, to previous Redskins drafts, rather than what someone else outside of the organization might be capable of. |

Re: What happens with Kyle Smith?
Worth considering that they are interviewing external guys for GM because they have to and Smith is going to be one of those candidates when they actually do the interviews?

Re: What happens with Kyle Smith?
This sort of reminds me of when the mighty Eric Schaffer left and all the consternation over that. Somehow we survived.

Re: What happens with Kyle Smith?
Totally different animal, capologist vs talent acquisition. Sure bring in Hurney or others without Smith (if he leaves) that will be your tell tale sign.

Re: What happens with Kyle Smith?
I mean no disrespect to Schaffer but let's be honest, we went almost 30 years without an elite talent evaluator who knows what he's doing. Do I want him to walk? No. At the same time, Ron likes experience, and Kyle doesn't have enough of it. I hope there's a way to keep him, but acknowledge if the two don't see eye to eye a separation is likely incoming. It is what it is. It's not the end of the world if he leaves.

Re: What happens with Kyle Smith?
So with the offseason market open it strikes me that I have not heard of Kyle Smith getting requests to interview for other teams GM jobs. Have I missed that?

Re: What happens with Kyle Smith?
I don't think he's being considered at all, which makes me think we should not be too concerned about him not being here. Kyle will probably become the de facto or actual asst. GM, once the team hires a GM.

Re: What happens with Kyle Smith?
By Zach Brook
January 3, 2021 5:03 pm The Dwayne Haskins era in Washington is over less than two years after the former Ohio State quarterback was selected by the club 15th overall in the 2019 NFL Draft. According to a new report from 106.7 The Fan' Sports Illustrated's Chris Russell, not only did the majority of the front office disagree with the idea of the franchise selecting Haskins, but Kyle Smith -- then the director of college scouting and now the vice president of player personnel - vehemently opposed the idea of taking the OSU standout and pleaded his case for Washington to draft one of three other players. What’s more is, Smith apparently waited and waited as the clock and picks started to inch closer to Washington’s choice … and then he started to take some command of the room. Smith started to ask questions on what the choice was going to be. Sources described to us a tense silence. Smith asked the room specifically: Is the organization really thinking of taking Haskins? At that point, one voice chimed in. It was the owner’s voice, confirming that Haskins was going to be the choice. After the selection was made and Haskins was announced as the draft choice, Smith continued on. "More silence ensued in the moments around the pick and with the pick made, Smith pushed himself up from the table and unloaded on the room - a speech that was described as "fiery and passionate'' about the pick and how much he disagreed with the selection," according to Russell. https://www.radio.com/thefandc/sport...s-during-draft Its Chris Russell reporting so who knows ... if true then I could definitely see Snyder saying he would never make Kyle Smith GM no matter what .. and perhaps RR with no allegiance to Kyle will not pick that fight and decide to just hire someone else of his choosing. All speculation by me but the pieces fit (the narrative I want to push lol). |
