I am not convinced Alex Smith will come back next year. My impression of Allen is that he’s probably a journeyman but a decent backup QB. I’m not sure about Heinickle except that he has potential even though he is “short” at 6’. Let Heinickle, the rookie first pick and Allen compete for the QB spot.

Until we get a very mobile, franchise QB, we will not be able to balance our excellent defense with an equally good offense.

No one that has played QB for us this year is the future. Alex needs to retire and Allen/Heinicke are competing for who is No. 2 for most of next year (that's a fantastic and needed job, and well paid).

I'd add a true #2 WR to take heat of Scary, and another TE to partner Thomas. We have the backfield (though I'd be tempted to add a bruiser to replace Barber), we just need the targets for a new QB to throw to. Can't help wondering if AS had more guys to target, whether his passing stats would have been much better?...

I just don't see him on the same level as Burrow was last year. I look at his games against LSU and the other night, two times against top competition and he was not the best QB on the field. He was CLEARLY outplayed in both.

Mac Jones looks like a better passer. Obviously not a better athlete or runner, but a better drop back passer.

Seems to me that if we want to get a "franchise QB" in this draft, we are going to have to give up something to move up into the top 10. Where we will be drafting, the best we can hope for is Trask or the kid from Cincinnati and neither of those two seem like a sure thing.

Seems like a lot of WRs and LTs in the second half of the 1st round.

Things are setting up nicely.

I just want want some one with more than 2 years starting and it would also be better if they played in a pro style offense... Haskins was a mistake I am a little leery of Heisman trophy winners because of pas history but that does not mean the won't work out... I like Mac Jones also. I think Lawrence, Fields and Wilson will be gone by the time we pick unless we trade up. Mac Jones may also be off the board as well.

I really like Desmond Ridder from Cincy as a QB, he would need to sit a year and learn but he big upside to be a solid QB.

Re: The Too Soon 2021 NFL Draft Thread

I agree that longer term Ridder could be an NFL QB. But I am not sure if it would take 1 year ..... or 3. And that is the problem. We are in an unusual situation where a defensive unit has jelled very quickly while our offense, particularly at QB is far from certain. I think that the four QB's who could be ready to start next year are Lawrence, Fields, Wilson and Jones. But to get one of them, we would have to "trade up". So the question becomes whether the cost of moving up is worth the immediate benefit of obtaining one of the top four QB's. I am hopeful this off-season that football professionals, not Dan Snyder will be making that decision.

Re: The Too Soon 2021 NFL Draft Thread

You can take Ridder at 19 because even if he doesn't pan out that isn't a huge loss, I'd rather take him in the 2nd tho

I think Mac Jones is more NFL ready than Ridder. I haven't watched all their games, but in the few I have seen, I think I'd take Jones over Ridder. I don't know where they will be drafted...19 seems pretty high for both of them. If Jones can be had with that 2nd round pick, I'd be ok with that.

How is everybody who knows college football feeling about Mac Jones? I only saw a bit of one game, but he looked like a guy who might be available and have a shot.

He's better than Trask and Ridder right now but that doesn't mean he'll be better in a few years. Low ceiling, accurate thrower , decent arm, can't move well.. He is not a Justin Herbert but he could be a Kirk Cousins type.
