Let's do a little math here.
I just checked out the Wall Street Journal site and you can buy US Treasury Notes or Bills at the moment with a yield of about 4 %. If you invested $34.5 million in treasury notes/bills at 4% you would get $1.38M in interest every year. After taxes, you would get to keep about $900K - assuming you chose to live in a state where there is no state income tax. I don't know about any of you out there, but I just might be able to get by on $900K per year after taxes. And that takes into account that I would no longer consider drinking PBR or Keystone (should be called Tombstone!). I'd be exclusively sipping the good stuff...

The Colts are crazy. This deal might give them a little cap room this year, but in the next 2-3 years. They will be having to make some tough cuts to their up and coming roster in order to pay Manning. No ONE player is worth that much money. This will be another Alex Rodriguez to Texas situation, because the rest of the team is not good enough to win a superbowl. The defense is still short 2-3 players good players.
You can do this if your roster is set to go to the superbowl, but the colts are just a little short. |

Good for the Colts!! Dont have to worry about playing him much in the season. Sure would be nice to have a qb like him. I watched the Skins/Colts game a couple of years ago and rembember (i think) Peyton liking the Redskins when he was a kid.

That is absolutely crazy. I totally agree with the A-Rod comparison. The Colts have sold the farm for one player. They'll be in deep trouble in the next few years. And he hasn't won a Super Bowl!!! How much will Brady want in his next contract????
P.S. Does Manning need anyone to carry his suitcases for him????

I love football and the Redskins are one of the joys of my life, but the money these guys are being paid to play a GAME is ridiculous when you look at the average salaries of firemen, school teachers, police officers and other professions that are truly critical to our society. Beyond that, it makes a $20 million signing bonus look like chump change. The bubble is going to burst someday ... it can't keep going like this.

I know, it's a crazy world where oversized kids playing ball get more than all the teachers combined.
But, were the colts really going to let him go? QB is the top postion, and he's (one of) the tops.

If the Colts let him go, they would be critizied severley, but Manning would have just put some other team in this position.

I think the Colts will live to regret this contract, sooner rather than later. The average annual cap hit is something like $14 million dollars. I know this year's hit is $10 million, so that mean some larger salaries down the road and some larger cap numbers as the years roll by.
