One could say knowledge and experience are two different things. Also, from what I’ve heard about his dad’s tenure as GM...learning from him may not be a positive. 🤷*♂️ We’ll see. I’ve learned over the years not to stress over this stuff since we have no control over it.

Re: What happens with Kyle Smith?

What's really frustrating is how many really talented people who have been in the building and have gone on to find success with legitimate ownership.

I mean really. Where were we going with Gruden when LA hired Mcvay. The folks who have been on the inside, who have been privy to the best information to inform such a decision have always gotten it wrong.

There are respected reporters who have compared Smith's talent and approach to that of a prodigy, similar to Mcvay.

It would be a shame if he becomes the next name on the list.

Actually his dad did a decent job in Buffalo and SD, he was better than Hurney.

Also heard he was a grade A ass as well. We will see how it all plays out. Ron knows what he’s doing IMO. I know on other boards people seem to forget the Panthers were a mess and he took them to 15-1 and a Super Bowl.

He has a young, smart and up and coming talent evaluator as good as Beathard and you just don’t risk losing him like you did Sean McVay.

Oh I don’t want him gone. I read on another board some people think they are bringing in the guy from Carolina for a couple years to show Kyle the ropes of the admin side of being a GM.

I’m fine with that as long as Kyle is good with it.

That's not a given.

It's obvious Kyle Smith's eye for talent isn't the issue here, it's him being young and having minimal experience handling those other GM duties.

Heard the Grade A ass thing too. His dad also had the same eye for talent, the Chargers drafted well under AJ Smith but either ownership or Smith was too cheap to pay them when their contracts were up. They let a lot of talent walk in those days and it cost them their window with Rivers/Tomlinson/Gates.

As good as Beathard?

If that were the case he'd have 31 other suitors
The kid has potential but hasn't even produced a winning team yet.

Beathard? Hall of fame dynasty builder.

Lets not get too carried away.

Re: What happens with Kyle Smith?

Dude, get some perspective.

Beathard is historically one on the 5 best pure GMs in the 100 year history of professional football.

Kyle is the son of a above average GM.

Yes Kyle has drafted well over about 3 years, but in no way should he be compared to Beathard. The guy has a single year or shared experience dealing with vets. I believes he deserves a GM contract too, but I think you've made an outrageous comparison, thats all.

I know what Bobby did, 4 teams, 7 SB appearances and 4 SB wins, there is a reason he’s in the HOF. My point is, in 3 years of drafting Kyle has accumulated a nice haul, if you looked at the list, it’s no coincidence. The pattern also shows his draft are getting better from the previous ones and he’s doing it in 7 rounds, not 12. We haven’t had a talent acquirer like this since BB, he’s 35 and just getting started. This guy could keep the team in contention for many years. If we make the playoffs, he’s the first person I would give credit too for building that Dline, bring McLaurin Gibson in the O.

Re: What happens with Kyle Smith?

Agree. Love his recent drafts. Id love him as a GM too. Hope he can handle the free agency side. Losing a HOF potential LT hurt us significantly. If we had him, we'd definitely be in the playoffs. Imagine screens with gibson in space with trent williams escorting him. What a major screwup by Bruce. This should NEVER be allowed to happen again

Re: What happens with Kyle Smith?

Per Ian Rapoport, the team is planning on finding someone to fill in the GM position this offseason. I'm not sure what this means for Kyle Smith, I just hope we will keep him somehow for years to come.
