Re: Commanders 2023 Off-Season Thread
Ben Standig just reported that we are expected to franchise tag Payne. Great move if/when this happens. I'm a little bit leery of signing Payne to multi years contract since he blew up in the contract year, plus there are some reports stating that Payne doesn't interact much with rest of the Dline players. I think I would prefer for us to tag him 1 or 2 times then let him go.

I think getting 6 years of solid to very good play is a worthy investment of a 1st round pick. If we can't extend him, I'd let him walk after this year, with a hearty handshake on the way out.

If we're going down the tag road with him it better lead to a trade or long term deal. Can't just tag him twice and let him walk.

Re: Commanders 2023 Off-Season Thread
Payne had a great year, and he deserves his pay day. However, I am hoping that the intent is to tag him, then let him see if he can negotiate a deal with another club. I don't think we'd get two first round picks for him, but I'm sure we can flip him for something better than a future late 3rd round compensatory pick. Then use the $19 million saved to upgrade the O-line, and LB/CB. We'd still have a very solid D-line with Sweat, Allen, Mathis, Ridgeway, Obada, Young...

I think they'll trade him

Re: Commanders 2023 Off-Season Thread
6 years of solid play and a likely 3rd down compensatory pick is a pretty good use of a 1st round pick. I hope they keep him, but it takes 2 to party, and some guys staying just isn't in the cards.

Re: Commanders 2023 Off-Season Thread
5 years of solid play, keep the $19 million, and acquire a couple more picks would be even better.
Can't keep them all, and I think we can get by without him while using that $$ and potential picks to upgrade other areas of need. |

But I think the most feasible plan for next year is that we either extend him or he plays here on the tag.

Yeah as really wished Eric was a head coach in the very first place. But hey he will take what he can get.
